National Winners 2010


Holy Family BNS was chosen from more than 1,000 schools nationally as the Greenest in the country. The Green Awards was set up by Minister John Gormley and Holy Family BNS was declared the overall winner at the RDS in Dublin on the 9th April 2010. Pauline Fahy, Chairperson of the Green Schools Committee and Jo Shannon, an active parent on the committee received the first prize trophy for Holy Family BNS.
To date the school has three Green flags and is well on the way to acquiring their fourth flag. These have been awarded for Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Energy and Water. Holy Family BNS have also recently have had their assessment for their fourth Green Flag that is awarded for travel. At Askea BNS, loads of boys walk and cycle to school as part of WOW and COW. Gardens are maintained to a very high level. Holy Family also participates in the Incredible Edibles Project. The school also has created insect and wildlife friendly habitats as part of their successful Science School of Excellence project. The key to Holy family BNS’s success is the high level of co-operation between staff, parents and especially the children who put in a load of work maintaining the schools high green standards.
